Handy Guide to Organizational Design

January 07, 2017

I often get requests from people asking about what I do as an organizational designer. In response, I started a google doc about a year ago to document resources and answers to FAQs. I've now shared that document with more than 100 people. Clearly there is an appetite to learn more about organizational design. :)

Recently, someone in London from the Policy Innovation Group at the Department for Work and Pensions reached out to me with this request: "I've recently been given a project at work - I was perplexed for a while as I wasn't sure exactly how to frame what I'm doing, but I now realise that it is organizational design! I was wondering if you could recommend a good, practical introductory text (or other resource, e.g. a website)." She pointed me to a similar website about design for start-ups (I hadn't seen this site before but it is beautifully designed!) and asked if I could make something like this for organizational design.

So, I took my google doc and created a handy guide that I hope will help others understand organizational design. It is still a work in progress (it needs some design love), but you can find it on my website here.

If you have more questions you'd like answered, please leave a comment and I'll add to the guide.
